Benefits of Side Opening Shipping Containers?

Convenient Cargo Handling

The side doors provide convenient access to load and unload cargo at ground level without needing to lift items up and over the top of the container. Forklifts and pallet jacks can load and unload cargo directly through the side doors. This is more efficient and safer than lifting heavy or bulky cargo up and over the top of a container.

Faster Loading and Unloading

With direct side access, cargo can be quickly loaded and unloaded through the side doors. Workers do not need to secure cargo to lift it to the top of the container or lift the items down from the top. Cargo can be rolled or driven directly in and out of the container through the side doors, speeding up the overall loading and unloading process.

Flexible Options

Side opening containers come in different door configurations including roll-up doors, swing doors or removable panels to suit different needs. The various door options provide flexibility in how the side access can be utilized. Roll-up doors and removable panels offer the largest openings, while swing doors may be more secure for some types of cargo.

Types of Side-Opening

Shipping Containers Available

20-Foot Open-Sided Storage Containers

The most common and smallest open-sided storage container available measures 20 feet in length (20'OS). The side doors can open in approximately 5-foot sections until the entire 20-foot unit is accessible. Users have the option to open sections of 5, 10, 15, or the full 20 feet. Multiple forklift pockets allow for easier maneuvering of the container around a site without risk of damage to the unit.

40-Foot Open-Sided Storage Containers

The longest and tallest open-sided containers available measure 40 feet in length and stand 9 feet 6 inches tall (40" high-cube). These units allow for partial or full access along the entire length. With side access spanning the full 40 feet, the 40OS units can readily accommodate storage of the widest or longest products not typically fitting into a standard 40-foot container with only door access. The 40-foot high-cube open-sided containers are designed to open in 10-foot sections, permitting access to segments of 10, 20, 30, or the entire 40 feet of the container.

━   THINGS TO CONSIDER

Before Buying Side opening Shipping Containers

Size

When selecting a side opening shipping container, choose a size appropriate for your needs. Common sizes range from 10 to 40 feet in length. A 20 or 40-foot container is suitable for most commercial and industrial applications, while a 10-foot container may be better for personal storage. Consider how much volume you need, the dimensions of items being stored, and allow additional space for easy access and maneuverability.

Material

Side opening containers are available in steel and aluminum. Steel is the most affordable and secure option, while aluminum is lighter weight and resistant to corrosion. For shipping or storage in demanding environments, steel is typically the best choice. Aluminum can be a good option if frequent relocation or mobility is a priority.

Door Type

The type of doors the container features is essential to how you will load and unload cargo. Consider if roll-up doors or swing doors would better suit your needs based on the size of goods you need to fit through the entrance. Roll-up doors often provide a wider opening but may require more clearance space. Swing doors typically open to a narrower width but do not require additional clearance.

Security

Evaluate what security features the container offers to protect your cargo, such as lock boxes, alarms or monitoring systems. Additional security features will provide enhanced protection for valuable goods. However, they often come at a higher cost. Determine what level of security is necessary for your needs and budget.

   Applications

Side Opening Container Uses

Transporting Heavy Machinery

Side opening containers are commonly used to ship heavy machinery, equipment and vehicles that cannot be loaded from the top. Their side doors allow forklifts and cranes to easily load and unload cargo. Once the cargo is secured inside, the doors are closed for transportation. Upon arriving at the destination, the side doors are opened again to unload the cargo.

Storing Accessible Inventory

Warehouses also frequently use side opening containers to store inventory that needs to be accessed regularly. Their side doors allow workers to quickly load and retrieve inventory without having to unload other items stacked on top. This makes side opening containers ideal for storing medium-sized parts, tools or other regularly accessed inventory. The doors can be secured with padlocks or bolts for security when not in use.

Temporary Workspaces

Some companies use side opening containers as temporary workspaces or storage spaces on construction sites. The containers provide an enclosed, lockable space for keeping tools, equipment and supplies on location. Their side doors make it easy for workers to access necessary items and then secure everything at the end of the day. Side opening containers can also be used as actual workspaces, with the addition of lighting, ventilation and other modifications.

Albert O.

Santa Clara County, CA

I spent a week trying to purchase a conex box but no one can deliver to my address. I overcame local delivery challenges by reaching out to Super Box last Monday, January 8 and was convinced to place an order the same day for a used 20' conex. To my surprise they were able to deliver the container 3pm the following day. Kudos to Sarah! Definitely giving them a 5-star review!
